What Is the Difference Between CA1 and CA2?
If you’re a federal employee who’s been injured or become ill due to your job, understanding the right forms to file is essential to protecting your rights. Two of the most commonly used forms under the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP) are the CA-1 and CA-2. While they may seem similar, they serve very different purposes.
So, what’s the difference between a CA1 and CA2 form?
CA-1: Traumatic Injury Form
A CA-1 form is used to report a traumatic injury—an injury that happens suddenly and at a specific time and place. Examples include:
- Slipping on ice at work and injuring your back
- Getting hit by a falling object
- Spraining your wrist while lifting a heavy package
This form must be submitted within 30 days of the injury, and ideally as soon as possible. Filing a CA-1 starts your claim for medical benefits, wage compensation (if needed), and helps you access the care you need without delays.
CA-2: Occupational Disease Form
A CA-2 form, on the other hand, is used to report an occupational disease or illness that occurs over time due to work conditions. These injuries or illnesses typically develop gradually. Examples include:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive typing
- Respiratory issues from long-term chemical exposure
- Hearing loss due to years of working around loud machinery
Because these conditions are not linked to a single event, the CA-2 form includes more detailed documentation to establish the connection between your condition and your federal job.
Why the Right Form Matters
Filing the correct form is critical. A CA-1 for a repetitive-use injury may be denied, while a CA-2 for an acute injury could delay your benefits. If you’re unsure which form to use, it’s best to speak with federal workers’ compensation experts who know the system inside and out.
